Final Task Proposal: “Cultural Festivals Around the English-Speaking World” Using Genially

 

For my final activity, I chose the Genially speaking project from the Owl About English blog because I liked how it combined creativity, research, collaboration, and presentation skills. I will adapt it to focus on cultural festivals in English-speaking countries, which allows students to explore traditions, food, music, and celebrations while practicing English.

Objective of the Task

  • Practice speaking in English in a structured but interactive format.
  • Improve presentation and digital storytelling skills.
  • Encourage collaboration, research, and active listening.
  • Learn about cultural festivals from different English-speaking countries.

Proposed Stages

Day 1: Planning and Research

  1. Form groups of 3-4 students (mixed abilities to encourage peer support).
  2. Each group chooses a cultural festival from a provided list (e.g., Thanksgiving, Mardi Gras, Diwali in the UK, Australia Day, etc.).
  3. Decide on a Genially template and plan which interactive elements to include.
  4. Begin researching the festival: history, traditions, food, and fun facts.

Day 2: Content Organization
5. Complete the research phase.
6. Organize the information into Genially panels.
7. Add images, interactive elements, and videos.

Day 3: Final Touches
8. Finish the presentation and assign roles: speaker, designer, fact-checker, and question leader.
9. Rehearse in groups.

Day 4 & 5: Presentations
10. Groups present their projects in class.
11. Audience completes a peer evaluation rubric and asks questions to encourage interaction.

Expected Outcomes

  • Students practice speaking naturally using notes rather than scripts.
  • Collaboration improves, as students must agree on content, layout, and roles.
  • Active listening is encouraged through audience participation and peer evaluation.
  • Students gain cultural knowledge while improving their digital literacy.

Future Improvements

  • Include checklists for co-evaluation to encourage accountability.
  • Allow students to create mini quizzes or polls within Genially to engage their audience further.

    I really like how your blog includes a variety of resources such as games, songs and digital tools, which make learning English more engaging and fun for primary students.
    One aspect that could be improved is adding clearer structure or sections so students can navigate the content more easily and use it more independently.

    I have found your blog very interesting, we can see a wide range of activities where we can use interactive tools we have learnt in the course. I specially like your task with Genially since we have a clear guideline of the activity.
    Something that could be improved is the general layout of the page. It could be more attractive for young students a colourful page with pictures and links to different videos.

  USING EDPUZZLE IN THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM I carried out this activity last Friday, just a few days before Saint Patrick's Day, using a short authentic video about the history and traditions of the celebration. I chose this video because it connects with a real cultural event that we will celebrate in class on Tuesday 17th. In this way, students can start becoming familiar with the celebration beforehand and gradually learn about its origins, traditions and symbols. I think this makes the listening activity more meaningful, as students can see a clear connection between what they learn and what we will later do in class.
